The nymphs inhabit various substrates, from rocky riverbeds to silty lake bottoms, feeding on detritus and algae. They are a primary food source for numerous smaller fish species and aquatic insects.

Emergence from the nymphal stage is temperature-dependent. As water temperatures rise into the 60s Fahrenheit, often peaking in the 70s, mass emergences can occur. These hatches are not uniform events; they can vary by species, body of water, and localized environmental cues. The newly emerged insect, known as a subimago or 'dun,' flies weakly to nearby vegetation, where it molts one final time into the sexually mature imago, or 'spinner.' Adapting Approach

Successful angling during a mayfly hatch necessitates an understanding of the forage chain. Instead of attempting to "match the hatch" with tiny mayfly imitations, focus on lures that mimic the panfish and baitfish that are actively feeding on the insects. Topwater lures like poppers, walking baits, or buzzbaits can capitalize on the surface commotion created by the primary forage.

Subsurface presentations prove equally effective. A jig and trailer or a swimbait can imitate a bluegill or crappie moving through the active zone.
